In the mid 1960s, Ferruccio Lamborghini wanted to make the most powerful, fastest and luxurious grand touring car to date. He gave the job to designer Marcello Gandini of Bertone to design a front engine V12 powered car that offered excellent room for 4 adults with practical trunk space. To that end, the chassis of the 400GT was stretched to accommodate the extra room needed. The Lamborghini Espada S1, named for the Spanish bullfighter's sword, was released in 1968. This series 1 features a 325 HP 3.9 liter quad cam V12 and sold a mere 176 units between 1968 and 1970. The series 2 (this model) offered 350 HP making it a real 150 mph GT car. It was upgraded with luxury appointments including full length carved wood fascia for the dash, better air circulation in the rear and upgraded slotted disc brakes. The car had two gas tanks accessible from the vents on the C pillars. The series 2 sold a more respectable 575 units between '70 and '72. The series 3, with larger bumpers, an all aluminum dash and revised suspension sold 456 units from '72 to '78.
Here's AUTOart's model of the series 2 Espada:
Well.... it's a great AA effort and these are fantastic pics of an odd (IMO ) sports car. "It-ta looks-a pretty-a-good. I did nodda espada too many a-crazy dings - other than those-a too-biga-wipers." 😆 😆 😆
Questa è una macchina bellissima. (Translation for Chris: This-a car is a-beautiful.)
It is a great looking replica from AUTOart of this especially beautiful and attractive automobile. A really great Lamborghini diecast car to display and show off it's astounding detail. This is not just a "grocery-getter". (although it would be wonderful at that, too !)
Man oh man Rich, you are a wealth of information about many foreign cars I know very little about. Thank you!
