1966 Ford GT40 MKII carrying the Mercury name on the side driven by Dan Gurney and Jerry Grant, this car failed to finish due to overheating.

Beautifully detailed model, John. Gurney had better luck with the MKIV.

@david-green A.J. Foyt was the wild card in the 67 race, I have read that Dan Gurney never opened up the car during practice because Foyt would push it harder, so Gurney played it cool and Foyt did not push to hard. That paid off for Gurney and Foyt in the race. I had the pleasure of meeting Dan Gurney in Homestead, Florida and got to shake his hand and talk to him during the Indy Car spring training they called it. The teams came to Homestead Speedway for a week of practice and I was talking to a couple of members of the Gurney Toyota team when Dan Gurney walked up, he had just arrived to the track. He was very nice and invited me to a tour of his teams hauler, it had a complete machine shop in it and they told me they could make any part they needed in that trailer.

I also met Derrick Walker that day as well, Derrick Walker was another super nice person, he walked me though his pit area and showed me his car, Robby Gordon was his driver at the time.

The Newman Hass team was nice as well I was invited into their hauler also.

Barry Green on their other hand was a real you know what and not a nice way.

@john3976

What a treat John. My visits to Sebring and Road Atlanta found equally receptive drivers and teams but I never got to shake Dan Gurney’s hand despite getting close on several occasions.

That 1967 Le Mans race was one I would have loved to see. It was spectacular racing with a victory by a car that only raced twice, winning on both occasions.

Dan Gurney and Stirling Moss were my idols back then.

My youngest brother, who is a racing fan, and I get along great despite our age difference of 8 yrs. We went to a book signing event for Mr. Gurney at a store in Burbank, CA years ago.

Rick had befriended Dan's assistant and when she had run out of batteries Rick stepped up to the plate and gave her all of the ones he had so she could continue to take pics.

We had such a great time with how gracious she was and inviting us down to AAR Racing in Santa Ana California for a personal tour of the factory and not only that but we got great pictures and autographs from Dan it was an amazing day.

One of the best things about the whole day that we were there was it only about 30 to 40 people showed up so it was just like a little family meeting of everybody and having a great time together. It's one of the best memories I have and I'll take to my grave.

And I used to make fun of my brother for finding out about all of these meetings and book signings and car shows going on but he and I have had the best times of our lives. And those include all of the Steve Saleen meetings and events that we've gone to.
