This unique 1938 Bugatti Type 57 S (+C) "Atlantic" Coupé chassis 57591 was delivered to English tennis player Richard B Pope and registered EKW-6. Painted in Sapphire Blue, It differed a bit with a slight face lift and no rear fender covers. The "S" marked the chassis as lowered and the "(+C)" meant that he sent the car back to the Molsheim factory to have the compressor added. Bugatti named this variant "Atlantic" to commemorate a pilot friend who died crashing into the South Atlantic. Pope kept the car for 30 years, and after a few other owners and a minor accident, it was bought by fashion designer Ralph Lauren who had it restored to its 1938 condition but had the restorer paint it black. Actually there's a bit of controversy whether the car was faithfully restored to original. The obvious change lies in the wheels which are probably painted aluminum rather than the original wire wheels. The restored car has received multiple awards including Pebble Beach Best of Show so if the car passed muster there, I guess it wasn't considered a criminal act.
Love this model! Has Ralph ever offered up any reasons why he restored this car a bit differently? Knowing the little I do about him & his collection it seems he would air on the side of "purity." 🤔 🤔 🤔
-As always, great pics!
@chris As Danny Coker, AKA: "The Count", likes to say, 'Ralph put his "stank" on it'. Because he's that rich, he can.
It looks good in black, but I definitely would have kept this fantastic blue.
Because he's that rich, he can.
Right, I knew this... the "because I can" card is nice to have & play every now & then. 😎
Besides, if/when he decides to return the car to its original color, what's another $240,000 paint job to him?
