Simple. You move the engine (an Offenhauser) to the left and tilt the engine 18⁰ to the right. Why? to lower both the cross section and center of gravity of this Belond Exhaust Special. The formula helped this car win in both the 1957 and 1958 Indy 500. This car was the brainchild of race mechanic Howard Gilbert, engine expert George Salih and driver of the '57 race, Sam Hanks. Once the secret was out, other Indy entrants began to appear in 1858 with a similar engine configuration but still couldn't match the Belond Laydown Roadster. This #1 car was the '58 winner driven by 3 time champion, Jimmy Bryan.
Note: the tread is scuffed off the left half of all the tires. More traction for all those left hand turns? But, more tire changes?
@mikedetorrice Oh wow. I just finished adding some stuff to the post. Anyway, it's Carousel 1.
Wow, excellent.... I have a couple Carousel 1 cars (not this one) and have seen this car before but never realized it was off-set. Very cool! 😎
@chris How offset? Check out the crankshaft access in the grill.
I don’t think that they could have got much lower than this. I really nice model of a groundbreaking design.
