Huge diecast collection for sale

Hey there. I recently inherited my father's die cast car collection. There are approximately 630 cars mostly Chevy and GM.I desperately need to sell them because they're taking up too much room. I was wondering if anybody could help me out on advice on how to go about this. I'm not really interested in selling one at a time as this will take an eternity. Do people buy whole collections? I'm obviously willing to sell for much lower than retail to move them fast. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Rebecca........

Hi,

This subject comes up often. If you're truly interested in selling these off "in one lump" I urge you to at least get a feel for what these models are worth. The scale, manufacture and condition all combine to determine value.

You can always "spot check" a random sample on eBay under advanced listings (marked "SOLD"). This way you'll see what certain replicas actually sell for vs. the asking price.

Once you "know" (or feel comfortable) with the value. Then you can list it, as a collection, on eBay, or Craigslist, etc... I would offer "pick up only" for obvious reasons (the time/money required to ship these would be immense).

High-end or "better" Hobby stores will sometimes buy entire collections too.

Now the bad news, most likely you will be offered less-than-fair prices for the collection. Buyers will beat you down at every turn. The best way to receive the maximum price is to:

1) Know what you have.
2) Know actual real-world values.
3) Be realistic.
4) Accept the fact that you will take some kind of loss, just how much depends your skills.

If you can provide some manufacture's names(Yat-Ming, Sun Star, Exoto, Ertl...for example) and scales (1/18, 1/24, 1/43, etc...) many of us here (on this forum) can at least get you started. That is, we can "loosely ball park" pricing/values.

Good Luck!

-Chris

630?!

Wow! This isn't so much an inheritance as it is a chore!

If the goal is to just get rid of them, the easiest way is to line them up and take some pictures so the cognoscenti can recognize the cars and (probably) manufacturers. It's a good idea to spend a little time looking at auction results here and just do some basic math in determining a "Lot price". It's an imperfect way of doing it, but it seems like the goal is moving them out rather than selling each one individually for the highest price.

Thank you

Hello.I have records of what he paid individually for them and it's upwards of 25,000. I've checked out some auctions and they range in value anywhere from $130 down to about $30. Almost all of them are in great condition in original boxes. Some boxes show slight wear and tear. I realize I'm going to get way less than what they're worth but I'm motivated to sell. About how many pictures do you think would be sufficient? And yes, your right, this is quite a chore.

You could also try contacting Jim Thoren at Supercar collectibles.

Their web site is supercar1.com and his email is

jimthoren at supercar1 dot com

Obviously substitute the "@" and the "." and remove the spaces.

They definitely buy whole collections and they are very reputable in the diecast industry.
