Like Mercedes, Jaguar ceased their racing program in 1956 retiring the D-Type race car. To try to recoup some money. Jaguar was to convert 25 chassis into road cars so among many other changes, gone was the huge dorsal fin. Unfortunately, 9 of the 25 cars were destroyed in a fire at their Browns Lane factory and most of the remaining 16 were sold in the US. Of course the most famous collector was Steve McQueen who referred to his Jag as the "Green Rat".
