In order to comply with FIA limitations on the height and width of the front dam and keep the front wheels out of the air flow, Tyrell's chief designer developed the P34 with two pairs of special 10" wheels replacing a pair of standard F1s. The added benefit gave the rear wing received undisturbed air flow. When it debuted in 1976, it was so successful that other teams began to develop their own. Ferrari and Williams submitted their prototypes to the FIA and the Williams car, with 4 driven wheels (ala the late '30's Auto Union Type D), was deemed so unsafe that they issued first a ban on that design and later decreed that all F1 cars could only have 4 wheels, ending the racing history of the P34. This Exoto model of Jody Scheckter's Swedish Grand Prix win with team mate Patrick Depailler right behind him. Depailler praised the car, but Scheckter called it "a piece of junk" and left the Tyrell team replaced by Ronnie Peterson.
This Exoto model is 26 years old and still looks cutting edge.
Always regret missing out on this. Amazing this came out last millennium. Just the other day I was looking at the MCG P34 to see how it compared. Obviously, they're completely different price points, but it wasn't even close.
I always really liked these 6-wheelers. True Scale Miniatures also made these more recently. No clue how they stack up next to these excellent Exotos.
