Named for the semi-nomadic Touareg people that inhabit the North African Saharan area that this dedicated rally SUV was built to cross in the Paris to Dakar Rally. This T2 gen of 3 was built and ran in the 2004 event placing a respectable 6th overall over 11,000 km of tough terrain. The AWD vehicle was powered by an inline 5 cylinder 2.3 liter turbocharged diesel engine that developed over 231 HP and 450 lb/ft of torque, and was mated to a 6 speed manual. Its high strength steel chassis was designed to survive 50ft leaps without pancaking. The entire body is a one piece carbon fiber shell. The suspension travel is about the same as a pogo stick. The interior is all state-of-the-art with digital displays and a battery of toggle switches encased in a tight roll cage. This nicely done Bburago model is of the lead #224 Touareg sponsored by Red Bull.

A 5 cylinder seems so odd..... 😯 🙄 This VW is a goofy looking thing, but it got the job done thanks to those "pogo sticks" on all 4 corners. 😉

When I read the title I was expecting a VW Square back. Much more interesting.
