.....Sunstar's very first effort in their successful American make Platinum line. I was shocked when I saw this 1/18 1955 Pontiac Star Chief 2-dr Hardtop advertised in magazines (remember those? ) It looked fantastic, far beyond anything Sunstar had done prior.  With its spring-loaded wipers, tiny photo-etched badging & lettering, actual cloth in the trunk and more, it's an excellent replica.  Of course, the convertible is just as gorgeous.

Hard to believe I purchased this on sale for $29.00, probably 15 + years ago.  You can't even buy an empty box  for that today. 😪

(...and yes, I swapped out the "wires" with 1958 Pontiac wheelcovers.  😏)

A beautiful 1955 Pontiac ! I was so glad SunStar did this excellent car. I happily have this one and several other great SunStar '55 Pontiac in various forms/colors.

As a collector who primarily buys racing cars I never had much interest in the Sunstar cars. Then they came out with these two - I found them to be very good models for the money.

@franklemire Yes, agreed.

Sunstar's recent releases have been limited to mostly re-paints. New-tooling 1/18 Platinum offerings dried up  years ago.  Some "Plantinums"  were better than others and there were a few "so-so"  releases but I do miss them.

Anyone have info on Sunstar's future production plans?

As Chris says, you can't buy an empty box today for the price these were back when they were released. I have both the hardtop and convertible and consider them among the ones I like best in my 1/18 scale collection.

I agree these Pontiac models are great bang for the buck but although the red/black and yellow/black are period color combos. as a kid they filled me with revulsion and I haven't got over it since.

@rich-sufficool

Any chance that I could ask... "What happened?"

@mikedetorrice

Sunstar's Platinum Collection was / is some of THE BEST 1/18 scale models EVER produced IMO.

Some, like this Pontiac, are even better than any Autoart model... IMO again.

Really?

I've had many guys (who were teens in the '50's ) tell me the same thing about Chevrolet's 1955 coral and shadow gray tu-tone combo.  Hmmm..... 🤔 🤔 🤔 I love them all!

@chris I guess my aesthetic color palette is more limited than yours. I really thought them garish and... disgusting. (BTW: I did like the gray/coral). In the mid-fifties that combo was a big fashion statement in men's shirts. The meme was "Real men wear pink". That combo will also date the tiles in people's bathrooms. LOL

@larry-kemling Those two are among Sunstar's better Platinum efforts. The '59 Merc is close to flawless, the '58 Limited has just a few minor "infractions."   But as you noted, they're EXCELLENT values!

Try buying an Exoto (with like features/detail ) for Sunstar money...    ....ain't gonna happen brother! 🙄
