This 1963 Shelby Cobra got the upgrade from the 260 to the 289 for the Daytona Continental 3 Hour Race that year. Driven by Skip Hudson, the engine's ignition system sported the Spalding "Flamethrower" system of twin distributors and dual points. It may have been a one time deal for the 289 as I don't find any other of the Cobras sporting the Spalding logo. I remember dual points being used back then. I had them on my '65 Commando 383 Satellite (a mild pain in the butt to continually regap and time). Initially, I looked up the model on the Exoto website. Say what you want about Tony K, I always looked at him as racing history savant. However, when I looked up the '63 Daytona Continental results, the #97 Skip Hudson car, it was listed as a 260 Cobra Mk 1 that finished in 23rd place. The engine in the model appears to be a 289, so who knows what the actual truth is.
beautiful model. Always liked this version.
Thanks guys. Another interesting racing and Cobra evolution story.
