2008 Challenger

I passed by a mopar dealer today and there sits right out front for all to see is a new black Hemi Challenger. I turned around and pulled in to take a peek. I just about had sticker shock.

Base price (window sticker) $41,000
"Adjusted Market Value" ....$20,000

Total out the door (less tax, tag & title) = $61,000

I guess they think they can add $20,000 to make up for the losses on all the other cars they have to sell at a loss in order to move them.

Not me. I bet I could take that $61,000 and find me a nice original 1970 challenger. Not a AAR, not a HEMI, but a nice 340, or 383 Challenger. I would rather have the original.

Didnt this type of price gouging hurt the new T-bird too?

Same thing happened 2002 Thunderbird,

First Shelby GT 500 cars last year. Dealers typically feel they are always the target for people trying to rip them off in one way or another, so this is their way of obtaining a little gratification! Next year these things will be everywhere, like dandelions, then you'll likely see discounting, particularly if Chrysler continues to step on its own johnson business-wise.

Interesting to compare Challenger/Bullitt

Bullit models now available at MSRP, saw a dealer with 6 of them. MSRP around $30K, Dodge is $40K with the SRT8 engine which pulls over 100 HP more than Bullitt, plus the stiff price of entry, you could pay 2 x Bullitt MSRP for the privilege of an early Dodge.

This was also an issue when the Viper first appeared, and the "Z" Vettes.

Are all dealers doing this? If not, this dealership will pay for their greed in the long run.

If all are doing it, well, same thing.

Granted, those that will buy this car probably are not worried about finances - still, this is the wrong economy to pull this sort of siht.

It could be that the dealer allotment was sparse and this dealer really would rather keep it on his showroom for a while rather than sell it.

Make no mistake, there is someone out there who will pay the asking price . . .

The only thing that killed the T-Bird was...

...a 6 cylinder engine.

Ditto for the Prowler.

I think to be greedy you have to be profitable first...

...and while I am not apologizing for these markups I think these dealers are just trying to survive.

Randy, right you are, as long as someone, pays, they will demand. Same with cars, gas, fees, etc.

we as a people dont' boycott as much as we should, we just say "which hand do
you want me to pile up the money in?" We have forgotten how to make thos e
who sell earn it, it's been all too easy to sell at high prices lately.
Maybe this current economic donwturn will change some of that? But there are a
lot of new rich who don't seem to care about value, or a fair price, just NOW,
NOW, NOW.

John, The truth about $20k over sticker....

They (the dealerships) are trying to get $20k over sticker because ALL of the 2008's are numbered limited editions, and they are ALL SRT8 6.1 LTR 425 horsepower cars (and all automatics). You can buy one without paying the markup, just shop around, but you will pay sticker price. The 2009's will be more reasonably priced with different powertrain options (including a sixspeed t-56 borg warner standard tranny). These are the facts, I just left employment of 7 years from a Dodge dealership.(mechanic/tech)

Challenger Mark-up

Our local dealer had a $25,000 mark-up, for a total of $66,000 (plus tax and license) on an orange Challenger.
Personally, I think these are overpriced at the $41,000
sticker. And the kicker was, it was SOLD!! I do not, nor will I ever, pay a mark-up on any vehicle. It's GREED,pure and simple!

Correction Randy, you are correct about the Prowler, but the NEWEST Thunderbird got a 3.9 LTR V8.
