Have it, love it.  I think the '58 Chevy Impala is one of the most beautifully styled cars of all time.  And it's one of very few cars that I think can wear a continental kit with grace between those unique reverse tailfins.  It's a design that (to my eyes anyway) looks customized almost.  The roofline too, is one of the best of any fifties car.  GREAT PHOTO TRIBUTE TO THIS MODEL John, thank you!

George I agree with your comments. I owned a white 1/1 with the 348 four barrel motor, skirts, dual antennas continental kit and spinner wheel covers. The interior in mine was turquoise/silver/black.

@bob-jackman How rare was the 348 in the '58? I didn't even know it was an option. Everyone I knew had HiPo 283s.

I have at least one WCPD or FM or DM Impala hardtop and convertible from every year between 58 and 64, except this one, a 1958 hardtop. Your pics will now make me redouble my efforts John.  Love to find one at a reasonable price in this colour.

Rich, I have no idea how many 58s were made with the 348 engine and while it was not as common as the 283 I don't think it was all that rare. There were two versions...the four barrel was called a Turbo Thrust and the tri power was called a Super Turbo Thrust. As I recall, the 348 was actually a truck motor.

@bob-jackman Yeah, it was a truck motor but I don't remember it being touted for cars until 1959. It just makes me think that it must be a fairly rare option but in 1958, I was 12 getting info from Hot Rod and Motor Trend when I had the money. BY the time I really got into cars, the '58 was just a relic that some of my buddies owned and they all had 283s.

A childhood friend's father had a 1958 Chevy Nomad wagon with the 348 engine, so I assume it was relatively common; although much less so than the 283.  I understand it was based on a truck engine too.

Back in the late '70's my friend's dad wanted to sell me his white over pink '58 Impala. It had the tri-power 348.  He was frustrated with trying to sync the three carbs, so he took off the two outer ones and built block out plates for the manifold and ran it as a two barrel.  He literally begged me to buy it.  He wanted $800 for it, which I didn't have after spending $500 for my '65 Mustang convertible.  I sure wish I had the money...
