Forced to abdicate, and ending the rule of the House of Hohenzollern in the German Revolution of 1919 and thereby World War l, Kaiser Wilhelm ll fled to an estate in Doorn, Netherlands where he was kept under a tight leash by both the Weimar Republic and after 1933, the Nazis, lest he would attempt a return to the monarchy. In 1931, he purchased this Mercedes-Benz 770 "Grosse Mercedes" F Cabriolet in Kriegsmarine (German Navy) gray with the Hohenzollern crest replacing the Mercedes tristar. On the bulkhead separating the two compartments are map cases and netting to hold a Field Marshall's baton and binoculars. Wilhelm dies in 1941 and this Mercedes survived the war and lies fully restored in the Mercedes Museum. This PMA model along with the CMC Black Prince are the first European 1/24s I purchased from a local show somewhere in the dawn of time. I only wish they'd added a folded top down.
Very cool Rich - GREAT shots!
another one I've been chasing for years. Great pics, and history lesson! Thanks Rich
Beautiful pictures with these autumn colours. I live only 20km from Doorn and visited Huize Doorn a few times. It is easy to imagine this car driving around the house in the 30s last century. One of my favourites by PMA. The leather seats are fantastic and indeed a folded top would have been perfect. I am glad i purchased one a few years ago.
Nice looking model. One I always planned on getting, but just never got around to it.
