June had specifically warned Timmy, that on this day of all days,he would be well advised to steer clear of the many open wells. All of which the Lassie family insisted added a rustic appeal to their tiny farm. Her advice served Timmy admirably,up to the point when a baby squirrel stumbled into well #14,and Timmy, honor bound to the creed, followed suit

With Lassie attending the dog show all weekend, and unreachable from his seat at the judges` table, the Civil Defense people were called to the scene to muck about as best they could manage

The constant questions from Carl about the threat of chafing in these damp conditions were annoying Mr Jingles, who had begun to surreptitiously maneuver Carl in the direction of yet another open well (#11)

Civil Defense search coordinator Beau Jingles would later, with great shame, think of this rainy day as the low point of his career professionalism and judgement.  Growing tired and exasperated with search member Carl Crosby's constant whining about how his tubby and underdressed body was once again chafing in the wet conditions, Jingles assigned Crosby to search the muddy northeast quadrant alone, which he knew to be rife with mud holes and old open wells.  He had grown very tired of lazy underachiever Crosby over the years and knew that the only reason he remained associated to this rescue group was for the free beer and sandwiches on practice days.  Jingles also found it hard to believe that, even in spite of his identical looks, Carl was actually the twin brother of rock star David Crosby.  Within an hour the hapless Crosby, now quite alone and a good distance away, had managed to become mired in mud and found himself belly crawling aimlessly in the pouring rain, completely disoriented.  As time passed Crosby finally paused to rest, growing exhausted from constantly thrashing about and crying out for help.  In the stillness Crosby's attention was suddenly drawn to a very faint musical sound.  Reinvigorated with curiosity, Crosby forced himself to crawl towards the sound and was shocked when he came upon a seemingly discarded transistor radio playing "Rhythm of the Rain".  After congratulating himself on his good fortune in finding a free radio and chuckling at the appropriateness of the song, it finally dawned on the slow thinking Crosby that it must not have been discarded for very long as the batteries hadn't died.  As the reality of the situation began to dawn on Crosby his senses greatly sharpened. As he crawled around  the immediate area Crosby was surprised to find an old well site with a caved in lid.  He called out into the opening and was shocked when he heard a faint  voice calling back, pleading for help.  Crosby began desperately screaming out at the top of his lungs for assistance which finally got the attention of a team of  searchers a distance away.  Within thirty minutes his colleagues had swarmed to the area and rescued the missing boy Timmy from the 25 foot deep well.  Much to the chagrin of Beau Jingles,  Crosby was heralded as a hero in the local news and awarded a medal for his bravery and tenacity in overcoming the horrible conditions to save young Timmy's life.  As Crosby basked in the glow of his moment of fame  Jingles ashamedly berated himself for his lapse of judgement and contributing to the making of a local legend.

@john-barry   EPILOG:  Beau Jingles, unable to bear witness any longer to Carl Crosby's endless recounting and growing embellishment of his rescue exploit,  bought himself an amphibious ride and transferred to the Search and Rescue Marine Division.

@john-barry  Well it don't surprise me none; them tailgate parties can get dang crazy as the liquor flows.  That birdhead fella especially tends to get carried away more often than not.
