Chevrolet's "Sleeper Wagon"... [PIC]

For 1969, Chevrolet's top tier wood grained Kingswood Estate 9 passenger station wagon featured a 390 HP 427 cid Turbo-Jet V8 with a special order option of the 425 HP L72 427 making it a real "sleeper". It came with heavy duty suspension and Positraction. This family hauler is rare and collectible with only 546 produced. With the standard 427, 0-60 in 7.2 seconds and a 1/4 mile time of 15.6. It offered all the luxe options of the Impala and even had a flip down step on the bumper for easy access to the rear facing 3rd seat. It's nickname? The "Draggin' Wagon". Oddly, there was no "427" call-out on the front fenders although many owners put Impala badges on the fenders.

Too bad this was not made by one of the mints, as I would surely have added it to my collection.  I will not spend what Automodello is asking for their static resin models, even though I will say they are nice. If it at least had a opening hood with engine detail I might make the purchase.

@carsman1958 Same here John. Not when I can get the curbsides like the Falcon for $35. Although the Automodello models are beautiful. They're just to pricey for this old retired fart, lol. Fantastic writeup, model AND pics Rich. 💯👍

I have the model in yellow and it is a knockout. I don't play with my models so a lack of moving parts doesn't bother me. On display the model can stand up to any model in my collection.

I purchased  Fiero from them couple of months ago.  Not ready to spend that much again so soon. Also, while I am fond of hideaway headlights, not so keen on this wagon.

@bob-jackman Bob, I will agree with you that it is a knockout, but from a price point of view and what you get is another story.  Yes I know it has been a  number of years since we could get a great FM or DM model for $120, and maybe today if they were still being built they would be around $200, but the features and working parts is what makes the difference.  I do not play with models either, but knowing that if I take it out of the cabinet to show it off, I can show off a great engine bay, interior of the model and whatever other working features there are that make it worth the money I pay for it.  I am with Geno, when I can even by an M2 model that on the outside will stand up with all the DM/FM models, and have working features for $25, I cannot understand why we cannot get a great diecast still for $100.

@carsman1958 John I understand your point. My point is that Automodello makes models of cars the mints never did and never will. As to the mints cars being $200 today if they were still being made, the last of the DM models were over $200 when they stopped being made. As to working features, yes I will occassionally show off a working feature on a mint car but the reason I bought the model was to represent it in my collection was for it's profile not the moving parts. I guess we agree to disagree.

It definitely is a beautiful automobile and replica of it, as the superb images show. This would be a true visual knockout to display.

For many years, first our family and then latter I, drove a gigantic 1974 Chevrolet Caprice Estate 9-passenger, 3-seat station wagon with a disappearing tailgate. It had a 4-barrel, dual exhaust 454 cid V-8 Chevrolet large block engine. I still miss that enormous monster !

These Automodello models are not produced by the thousands. Perhaps 50 of each color. The price of amortization of R&D, tooling and production alone justifies the pricepoint. So if you desire the images of these unusual choices, you will unlikely find a 1/24 of them anywhere else.

@bob-jackman  If the Mints were still making models today with the quality and maintaining the quality and detail, I don’t believe they could keep the price low enough to be salable. I’m going off the deep end and thinking around 300.00 to 400.00. I’d like to hear some thoughts on the matter.
