Did anyone here know that GM offered "headlight washers" on any of the cars years ago??

Upon looking up 68-69 Caprice on YouTube I stumbled upon a commmercial for a 69 Caprice. It's a cool 60s commercial that starts out with a classy looking woman talking about her new car! LOL She then proceeds to talk about how it does things that no other car can just sitting there! Hee Hee. Next clip you see the headlight covers open up and two streams of fluid squirting at the headlights!!! I NEVER knew any such feature exisited on a 60s GM car or ANY car of that vintage to be honest.

ANother "neat" feature it had was something called "liquid tire chain" ??? I never heard of this either. Apparently if your stuck in snow you press a button and some type of liquid is sprayed onto the rear tires!!
Here's a link to the commercial! VERY COOL makes me want to find a Caprice JUST like this one! Smile

How about a vacuum assist ashtray?

I believe it was Pierce Arrow that offered a self cleaning ashtray that used vacuum to clean itself out at a touch of a button or switch.

I also think one of the manufacturers offered a 'sander' that would dispense sand on your rear tires when on ice.

Vacuum assist ashtray was available on the 1957 Chevrolet.

Cool picture! I wonder what the chemical was??

Undoubtedly by today's standards the chemical used then would probably be considered NOT eco friendly or "environmentally unsafe" like almost everything! LOL

VERY cool pic, John, and if EVER there was car that needed all the help it could get.....

in the slippery, it was the first gen Camaro, or any of the other Pony Cars, for that matter.

OK if a NOVA had this I am starting to wonder if it was .....

A dealer installed accessory that could be done to ANY car! From seeing it work on the Caprice in the youtube video, I gather that it is simply tee'd into the windsheild washer pump. The older GM cars use a little piston type window washer pump that has a little cam inside and it does its squirt, squirt, squirt, squirt until the little cam inside the pump does a full rotation then a spring loaded LOCK lever holds it inplace till the next time the solonoid is activated which releases the cam. That said, all one would have to do is splice into the washer system, drill small holes to accomodate little fittings near the headlights and connect the hoses to the fittings that are stationary.

I ordered a new '69 Chevelle SS396, bench seat, 4-spd. & air conditioning

I also added headlight washers, which operated off the wiper switch. Water stream was not strong. Did not work very well. I passed on the liquid tire chain.

I wonder how many Nova buyers sprung for the headlight washers - probably not many.
