Not texture - digital artifacts.
"1. Is this car supposed to have a vinyl roof or black painted roof? This car has a black painted roof. DM would have done this right. Note that the pictures on DM's website depict a textured roof (enlarge to see detail)"
The top is painted flat black to represent a vinyl top. All the Highway 61 versions with a vinyl top are the same in this regard.
Would DM have done it that way? Actually, yes, they would have. Check out the '69 Turquoise Charger with a white top. It's painted on - flat white. They would also probably be charging $300 - $350 for one done to their previous standards.
The "texture" you see on the DM webpage for the Challenger is digital artifacts from blowing up the image. The brochure DM sent out doesn't show any texture in the pictures.
Is the Challenger to DM's previous standards? No. It's an ACME item being re-marketed by DM so the old rules don't apply. Is the quality reasonable for the price? That's a personal judgement call.
@ Mark Sweeney: I'm surprised at your comment about higher prices may lead to less sales. Seems that based on previous posts over the years here on the Forum, I should be the one dishing out that comment, not you.
Here's the deal Mark...
I won't say that I'm excited about $149 (plus shipping) either, but one thing is certain (at least for me), I've longed for DM to get back in the die-cast business for a long time (three years to be exact), and now that they are giving us a new car, I'm going to support them.
I got my car today (May 31st) and I can't tell you how excited I felt having the mailman hand me the box and then my opening it up. It's a little tickle of excitement that only us collectors can understand.
And yes, the cost is higher than three years ago, but then, so is everything else you have to buy today!
I want this tickle and excited feeling a lot more and I will support DM with each new issue they put out, with but two minor exceptions...that being, the cars fall in to my collecting years criteria (1940 to 1970), which has always been my criteria and the other that they are under $200. I will add that, the $200 threshold is priority more than ever for me now due to the fact that we are all aware of rot-cancer being an enemy of some of our cars.
All I've read here on the Forum for the last three years is how everyone misses not getting new cars anymore, and now that we are getting teased a little and DM is testing the waters again, we NEED TO SUPPORT THEM, so that they continue to grant our wishes! And it bothers me too, that some here are quick to nit-pic the car. That won't help our cause either if we wish DM to come through for us.
And who knows, if they do give us more cars, maybe we'll all see those "Wish Lists" return that we all looked forward to as well.
COME ON EVERYONE, SUPPORT DM by buying this model and letting them know that we are supporting their efforts!
