Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me? Did Franklin Mint ever issue the 1938 Alvis in all over green rather than the usual chrome and green? (If not, I've obviously bought one that has had a paint job!)

I think you have a BRG overspray. Perhaps the plating got damaged and the owner covered it up.

Hi Ken, thanks for posting. To my knowledge, FM only made the car with a chrome bonnet (hood). So if someone did paint yours, it looks pretty nice, albeit, possibly incorrect.

Welcome to the forums!

That you for your swift replies gentlemen, very helpful.

Am I imagining things, or was there once a database of diecast models here? With reviews and photos? I seem to remember checking up on Franklin Mint / Danbury Mint models?

Ah, good. I recall a very interesting resource, obviously the result of a lot of time and knowledge. It would be great to browse it again.

Someone must have done pretty darn good job of color matching. The wheels are also painted. If you are lucky it may even be a factory color sample. Would suggest that you pull the hood panels and look underneath how is the hinge attached. If the hinge is factory rivetted and the green paint extends underneath the hinge plate, that must be a factory paint. If you see chrome underneath, then it is likely a repaint. Perhaps you could post pictures.

Underside of hood is mainly painted matt black but there is a line of green that looks as if it extends under the hinge. Hinge rivets look original to my untrained eye. Some green has rubbed of the edge of the panel and that seems to be showing chrome. What I have now noticed is that the cross head screws that hold the body to the chassis look as if they have been removed and refitted (with some difficulty - cross heads slightly chewed up).

Looks like a repaint over chrome. A factory sample would have the part pained then rivetted to an unpainted hinge. Also the wheels of a preproduction sample would be molded in green plastic rather then painted over chrome. Again nice color match and the model looks great. It is also missing the driver side reverse mirror.
