Thomas, do you honestly think GM would ever be able to repay a loan?

Thomas, it was 25 years ago.............

it is not the same picture today. All three manufacturers are not anymore able to compete and pay their bills.

Mark, without a massive reorganization a loan would only forestall the demise of GM.

GM's inept leadership has been a big factor in putting GM in the position they're in now. And the UAW is a factor, too. A loan of any amount will only push bankruptcy off a few months. Because the UAW is not going to change their position. GM executives aren't going to change their branding and leadership methods. So I'm not in favor of giving them tax dollars when it is obvious it will never be paid off. And bankruptcy is on the horizon. This didn't happen overnight. GM chose to stubbornly stick to a business plan destined to fail. And now they're crying for government help. Too little, too late. Nuff said!

Well, they've been around for over 100 years, and employed a million Americans.

No offense Tom but I dont have that protection in my job and the fact you can defend that practice is part of the problem. Sure its the unions job to protect jobs but in this case there is no job. The fact you can justify the consumer paying this bumbs wage and benefits is bizare. I pay $9k a year for my medical, I contribute about $20k a year to my 401k, Ive worked for the same company for 30 years and the day after I retire, they have no obligation to me at all, no pension, no medical, no nothing.
Unions are there own worst enemy. I laugh when I hear Union official crying to the press cause the company wants the members to pay some of the medical insurance cost. Why shouldnt they, almost every taxpaying person does.
The unions are the single biggest reason GM is in this situation. With members living longer and longer collecting benefits that cost more and more how are they expected to pay for this??
Mangement comes in Second and the consumer third
