Not really surprised, George, because the position you have taken whether you wish to be the human in the human/machine interface or not is the belief of many others too. The potential of a major security compromise occuring in some way is very real - but managable, I imagine. A great many folk would hold a similar view to yours, George. People have the right to be cautious in these matters.
In my own situation specificaly, the service provided by PayPal allows me the ability to buy and sell hobby items to refresh my collecting from notionaly, anywhere in the world that were previously unavailable to me.

The risk to benefit ratio is heavily weighted so far, in my favor. Hopefully that's how I would like it to stay. But the risk is still there.

If a seller will not take Paypal or my check, I just don't bid. No offense to the seller or the way he/she wants to do business. Convenience is the name of the game.

I prefer Paypal. I actually have my American Express card attached to my Paypal account, so just another little layer of protection.

As for sellers on this site, I've had maybe 2 issues buying a car. That said, those issues were handled perfectly and I have no problem buying from them again. One guy went way above and beyond to satisfy me, which blew me away.

Frank, your points are taken. I will say this with regard to your (and others) reference to long bank lines. I'm not sure where you guys do or have done your banking, in my 49 years as an adult, I've NEVER waited in long bank lines. NEVER! Perhaps it is where you choose you choose to bank, but I've never been inconvenienced by long lines.

If a seller offers to accept personal checks that would have to apply to ANY buyer. I would accept a personal check from you George,and many others that I know from this site, but I would arrange that with the buyer privately after the sale. I wouldn't take a personal check from someone I don't know or has a bad rating history here, so I wouldn't offer it as a global payment option.

And Alan Frank, you can attest to my character as I've been one of your frequent buyers. Our transactions have been handled extremely well. I've sent my personal check and you've sent the car purchased.

Barry, I've done business with you and you took my check. I've emailed some folks before I bid on a car to see if they will accept my personal check, and they won't. I don't bid then!

Everyone is entitled to choose what form of payment they wish to accept, all I'm saying is that by their being selective, they are likely to miss out on some potential sales.

If a transaction is a first time for both seller and buyer, I can understand some caution. But I again remind folks that people buying and selling from this site have access to the "buyer/seller ratings" that are available for each to see (and everyone else too) on the auction site. Not to mention a good majority of us post here on the site on a regular basis, so it's not like were strangers in the night.

Check out MY buyer rating on the auction site. I'm proud that it is 100% positive from every seller I've bought from. And each of those sellers can attest to the fact that I contact them immediately upon being the auction winner and I seek to make our transaction as smooth and swift as it can possibly be.

I will always strive to be the BEST BUYER a seller here on the auction can do business with. It's my opinion that I will try to handle our transactions the way I also hope and expect every seller to handle it as well.

I've never been offended by a seller wanting to get paid before they ship the car.

I'm with you Rick. I used to get a money order/cashiers check when that was the only option but I no longer will go through the inconvenience that requires.

Yes that applies to you George but the auction doesn't allow different payment options for different buyers. If a seller says he will accept a personal check he has to accept one from any and everyone and he may not want to do that.

I agree, Barry. I use PayPal extensively to both buy and sell.

Well, I love electronic banking for both payments and depositing checks. I rarely step foot in a bank.

I mistakenly ordered a resin model from an unsavory vendor. When I realized what I had done, I was quite aware. I paid thru PayPal. He knew the rules and tried to run out the clock. Sent me info that the item had shipped two weeks prior to when he said it would. In reality, he only created a ship label. When I inquired directly, he gave me a hard time. Left offensive VMs on my phone. I disputed with PP and they were now engaged. He tried to only refund me money less the PP portion. When I pointed this out, they immediately stepped in and made sure that my full amount was returned to me. Others, who paid by check, lost hundreds with this guy. No recourse.
I have no issue paying for a service. This saved me my cash and then some.
