I haven't painted a model car in way more tears than I care to count. But I remember using a clear spray that they made in semi and full gloss. Would that work for you?

@perrone1 I use nothing but gloss paints.  It seems some come out nice and shiny, like the Mustang I just finished, and a the paint I put on a Corvette I am working on now is shiny.  It is almost like it is associated with the time of day, temperature in my building where I do the painting that makes a difference.  I just need to figure out when the best time is.

Yes, that makes sense, temps, humidity, etc. The paint on this guy looks mighty good to me!
