Oddly, this gives me flashbacks of OJ Simpson. One of 1001 1966 Hertz Rent-a-Racers built a marketing gimmick between Ford, Carroll Shelby and Hertz Rent-a-Car. Hertz got a slight bargain on these cars. They paid the same $3447 that the dealers paid for their GT350s but Ford threw in the stripes for free. Originally equipped with manual transmissions, the first cars were coming back with burnt out clutches so the the remaining cars came with automatic transmissions. As to the Cobra 289, it developed 306 horsepower over the R-code HiPo 289 that produced 271 hp. Model by Creative Masters some 30 years ago.

A gorgeous model of a gorgeous car.
Rumor has it that many of these came back with an engine swap.
That entire Hertz "rent-a-racer" promotion is a fascinating story; I encourage people to read about it. I was surprised (but not shocked) to learn about how MANY customers returned these cars with different engines. Unsuspecting Hertz agents had no clue that "Johnny Bag-of Donuts" had swapped out his stock 289 with this Cobra's hi-po 289. Just one of the SEVERAL inherent faults in this program which led to its ultimate demise.
