25 year old Stirling Moss with co-driver Denis Jenkinson took this special built 2 seater Mercedes 300 SLR spyder, the legendary #722 with its twin faired roll bars to an amazing win at the 1955 Mille Miglia averaging over 98 mph on some of the worst roads in Europe over 922 mile course in the unbeaten time of 10 hours and 7 minutes. There's a wonderful video narrated by Stirling Moss as he gets behind the wheel once again and reminisces about the race and the car here: https://petrolicious.com/films/sir-stirling-moss-and-the-mercedes-benz-slr-722-are-unbeatable
This quarter century old PMA model was quite the state of the art in 1/24 replicas and still commands your attention.
more great automotive history and pics. Thanks Rich
I've followed Stirling Moss since meeting him as a child at Aintree in 1950 right up to his death in 2020. He is my all time favourite driver.
This Mille Miglia car and his drive are one of my favourite remembrances. I'm missing this PMA model but I do have the CMC and a significant number of 1/43 issues.
Thanks for sharing this one Rich. Thanks for the film reference. Here are two more images from my files.
@david-green I loved that video, hearing his reminiscing, the look on his face when getting into the 722 and seeing and hearing the car being driven fairly hard on the country road. I'm glad you liked it too.
The photo' of Moss and Jenkinson taking that bend at speed is quite the image of cool intent.
