The SSK was a Porsche in Mercedes clothing. It was produced between 1928 and 1932. 40 of the Super Sport Kurz (or 'short' wheelbase) were built with half as race cars. They were powered by a supercharged 7.1 liter SOHC straight 6 and capable of 120 mph. As the cars were wrecked and cannibalized for parts over the years, there's only 4 or 5 left. The Paul's Model Art model (with those beautiful painted wire wheels) replicates the #87 car as driven in the 1931 Mille Miglia by Rudolf Caracciola. One of the survivors has a streamlined body commissioned by Count Trossi that was bought and restored by Ralph Lauren known as the "Black Prince". Model by CMC.
Classic M-B beauties, both of them ! Great job on the 1/24 replicas and your images showing them off, too.
as always great pics. Didn't know the origin of the Black Prince, thanks Rich
Both are beautiful cars but to me, the most appealing is that original SSK design as driven by Caracciola in the Mille Miglia. Enjoyed this post, as always, Rich.
