PIC: #7 Favorite on my shelf. The '49 Mercury coupe oozes with nostalgia if you were a kid in the 1950s and 60s, and still today for that matter. Sometimes called the "bathtub" Merc, it became a cult fixture due to it being the car the late James Dean drove in the movie, "Rebel Without a Cause".
Danbury Mint captured the feeling of those two decades with this Black Beauty! When I saw the ad for this car in a Sunday Newspaper supplement back in 1990, I wasted no time placing my order. It was only the SECOND 1:24 die-cast that I'd ordered, but there was no doubt it was a "must have".
Yes, it's "old tooling", but more than that it's "old school" all the way when it comes to classic automobile's.
And it's stood the test of time as a die-cast too. Today it is as bright and beautiful as the day it arrived on my door-step. If I had to pick cars on my shelf that I would never part with, this nostalgic Mercury makes my Top Ten list. DM later released two additional coupes, one in two-tone green and the other in two-tone tan, both are also on my shelf, along with the maroon convertible as well.
I love this car! photo no longer available

My first DM car.
I purchased this and the 55 Olds as Christmas presents to myself when i started collecting in 1998
I am enjoying "George's Top 10". For a "different" take on today's, how about the 24K Gold one?

I had and sold it...had a bunch of rash. Replaced with the two-tone beige one and love it!!!

Same problem, but replaced mine with the two tone green which I really like.
@ Barry Levittan: I had zero interest in the 24K gold Mercury. It wouldn't display well with my other cars. With all the great cars that DM could produce, or even another repaint of the Mercury, I never understood why they did that 24K one. I'd guess the market for it would be very limited.

It's more like a decorative collectible, esp with the wood base. Might appeal to non-diecast people.

Good description Barry. Don't think it caught on as a serious collectible by serious collectors.

My first DM model too, and it remains one of my top 10.
