Why were the front fenders of the 63, always so high over the tires? That has always prevented me from liking the car. Lower that front end, and it's a beautiful vehicle.

Maybe if you ordered it, but they didn't come standard with a tach, built in or otherwise.

Hate to disagree Tom - but it was part of the Super Sport package - at least it was on the one i bought - and others i knew of...built in - on the steering column - red line 6000

Beginning in 1961, the super sport option package included the following

The $53.80 option package included: special trim, simulated knock-off spinner wheel covers, power brakes and steering, heavy-duty springs/shocks, metallic brake linings, a 7,000rpm tachometer alongside the steering column.

Larry - it was built into the dash (not steering wheel) and agree it was part of the Super Sport option - maybe it was a regional thing - it included spinners emblems console and tach. The cost was $161.40 - other options for my car included 300 HP 4 sp posi 2 speed wipers am radio and white side wall tires - out the door $3034.70 8/7/63

Larry, There are also other references that advise that the '63 409 came with a dash mounted tach as part of the SS 409 package.

What I posted was the beginning of the SS package.

In which the tach was column mounted. I agree that by 1963 the tach was intergrated into the dash and the SS option package increased in price. Sorry for the confusion.
