This morning I got out my paint and supplies...

and painted the front clip of my latest Olds project. Actual paint time is probably less than 30 minutes, but there's 4 applications (primer, primer sealer, color coat, and clear coat), so I spend most of my time cleaning the spray gun.  Total time was about 4 hours. Here's a mock-up of what the finished product will look like.  I have to paint the dash top red and do some semi-gloss black painting under the hood before final assembly.  The rear clip is standard DM red.  Enjoy!

Thanks Pete, for this comprehensive look into a major step in your process....looks like another incoming home run !!!!!..is the use of a primer sealer made necessary by the metallic nature of the color coat?

Hi John, the purpose of Primer sealer is twofold.  First, it acts like a primer and allows the paint to stick to the metal, and second, it seals any body work and prevents any color bleed-thru.  It also dries with a slight sheen and doesn't require any sanding prior to color coating. Here's a pic of an old Corgi model that I stripped and painted with the primer sealer.  You can see the sheen as compared to a primer which dries flat.

I hope so!  It was a color combination available thru Oldsmobile in 1955, although I've never seen a 1:1 like this.

I love seeing this work, thanks Pete. Are they "samples" of automotive paint?

Hi Geoff.  No, they are custom mixed automotive paints using the original color formula if available.  Otherwise, I try to find a close color match and have it tweaked to come as close as possible to the original color.  However, nothing is exact.  I've been to car shows where there's two or three Panther Pink Mopars and they are all different shades of pink.  Then there's the inevitable debate on which one is correct...
