After one of their factory 300SLRs were involved in a horrific crash that killed over 80 spectators as well as the driver, Mercedes abruptly withdrew from the European circuit. With an eye to American sports car racing as well as street version sales, by 1957, the 300SLS (race-worthy) and the 300SL (street) were born. A new tubular chassis design eliminated most of the high sills that necessitated the gull wings, and the 3.0 liter 8 detuned to 240 HP for the street, North American sales were booming. As to the SLS (with the 'S' for 'Spezialversion', Mercedes had 2 factory team cars to be driven by Paul O'Shea (#57) as well as privateers. CMC made the two SLS as configured for the SCCA circuit and are absolute gems.
I like how the silver SLS's cowl is clad in that blue leather to eliminate glare.
Beautiful model that mimics the 1/1 to perfection. I don't collect race cars but this looks great.
@bob-jackman The silver one is absolutely jewel-like... and heavy as hell too.-
Wonderful models that I would love to have. Too pricey at this point. Thanks Rich.
@rich-sufficool thanks Rich, much appreciated. There is something so alluring about the simplicity of the cars design. That's a mean stare on Jimmy!
