Emil Jellenik, whose oldest daughter is the eponymous "Mercedes", was a well heeled German diplomat and and a motorsport enthusiast. At Daimler Germany, his head designer, Wilhelm Maybach, created the Mercedes-Simplex 18/28 (displacement/horsepower) in 1902 and it was an immediate success racing in Europe and the US. By 1904 (this model), it was available as either the 28/32 or the 40/45, all 4 cylinders. From 1907 until the end of production in 1910, this chassis was available with three different 6 cylinder engines ranging from 65 to 80hp, This design fulfilled Jellenik's vision for Mercedes of luxury and performance to compete with the likes of Rolls Royce, Bentley and Cadillac.
One of the early models I bought in my collection. I have always liked it for being unique & different.
Great photos.
