After the 1955 Le Mans horrific disaster, Mercedes-Benz withdrew from the European racing circuit. They made an exception for the American SSCA open sports car class. They sent two specially made 300 SLS cars to the team of Paul O'Shea. These roadsters were ultra light weight and had hand built 3.0 liter 6 cylinders engines that produced 225 HP. Their main competitors for the 1955 to 1957 circuit were Aston Martin and the Ferrari Monza. This Mobil Special was also lost to history:
The other of the pair, took the 1957 SSCA championship amassing 3 times the points of 2nd place Carroll Shelb's Maserati 300S. A California group recreated this lost SLS using a wrecked gull wing. It crashed at a vintage car race at Goodwood in 2015. The second SLS was built from scratch by Daimler's Mercedes-Benz Classic Center using the plans saved from 1955 in time for the 60th anniversary.
