One of 42 Mercedes-Benz SSKs (Super Sport Kurz or Short) built, this chassis (#36038) was sent to Japan in 1930 and then returned to the factory when it didn't sell. It was then sent to a Mercedes dealer in Milan who sold it to an Italian with a spyder body by Touring, Milan. It was raced in several events including the 1931 Mille Miglia. It was finally bought by Count Felice Trossi in 1933. He wanted his own custom body for the car and it was possibly designed by an American independent coach builder, Willy White. Trossi's family had sketches of the car from both White and Trossi. The body was commissioned in 1933 and delivered in 1934 as it exists today thanks to exhaustive research by American restorer Paul Russell. Trossi died early of cancer at the age of 41, but fortunately his family kept a significant amount of records including valuable photographs that made the restoration possible. The restored car was finally bought by Ralph Lauren in the 80s and won Best of Show at Pebble Beach in 1993.
the first CMC I bought. I wish they had stayed in 1/24. Great pics as always, thanks Rich.
@geoff-jowettIt's the first CMC for me too. There was a dealer at a show way back in the 90s that had this model and the Paul's Model Art Kaiser Wilhelm Mercedes. I had never heard of either company and I bought them both.
This a wonderful post about a great Mercedes.
Love this CMC Mercedes-Benz SSK. Thanks Rich.
Great writeup Rich. Mine has a red interior.
