...the Franklin Mint New Beetle. Here is my 2000 New Beetle Millennium Edition. It caught my eye this morning, so I pulled it out of the case to give it a once over. Wow, such detail...
Now for the fun stuff:Â
Engine with removable dip stick and opening gas filler door.
Windows that pull up and push down.
Front seats that slide forward and back with folding seatbacks, and opening glove box door with included gloves. Shoulder-lap belts, front and rear. Check out the bud vase with flower and the color-keyed cell phone on the dash. OK, not an iPhone or Android, but those weren't invented at the time. And no less than three (possibly four) cup holders!
Folding rear seat too.
Removing the trunk mat reveals the spare tire with jacking kit in the center, with 6-disc CD changer to the left.Â
Looking thru the wheel slots, you can see the disc brakes. This New Bug doesn't ride on no-name tires, but the correct Goodyear Eagle RS-A 205-60R16 radials.
Lots of good stuff here that can be had, for those interested, in the $30-$90 range on eBay.Â

great pics of a great model Pete. I have this blue one, and a red one that was available at such a low price I couldn't resist. And I must say you've highlighted some features I didn't know about, thanks Pete!
Great model, terrific three in Red, White & Blue!!
Great pictures and review Pete. I have often remarked that this model is one of the best ever as it truly is a 1/1 shrunk down to 1/24 scale. I have the blue one and the white one which was part of a diorama with a black 1967.
Pete great shots. I will need to pull out my blue one and really look it over. I have 5 in total with the Red, White, Blue, Yellow and Lt. Blue. Do they all have the same features?
Â
Yes John, all of them have the same features. I see you have the LE's of the internet-only Vapor Blue and Reflex Yellow Beetles!
Â
Thanks Bob, and I agree with you about the realism of these Beetles. I've got the black '67 Bug displayed with my FM Corvair and Falcon. I wish that FM put the stateside bumpers with the overides. I don't remember seeing any back then without them. The '67 is probably a European version based on the headlights. US bound VWs had sealed beams.
Â
The New Beetle is a real bargain when you consider all of the working features. It certainly is an underachiever on the secondary market. With prices so low you almost have to buy it!
I have that Millenium version also. The amount of 'gadgets' in this model is impressive. What's more impressive is their design and execution... they all actually WORK! and work well
Wow, I didn't realize it was that detailed. That IS cool. 😎Â
@pete-rovero Thanks Pete, I do. Years ago I would scour the other auction site and I managed to pick them up at great prices. No one really wanted those beetles.
Amazing details ! A really nice replica and in a great color.
@pete-rovero Pete, I agree about the Overrides on the bumpers.
