What we know as the 1935 Mormon Meteor was originally called the Duesenberg Special. It was built on a Duesenberg Model J rolling chassis by Ab Jenkins to attempt land speed records. He set a one hour record of 153.97 mph at Bonneville and an amazing 24 hour record of 135.57 mph. Looking for faster times, he replaced the Duesenberg '8' with a Curtiss Conqueror V12 aircraft engine. It was in this configuration that it was given the name Mormon Meteor from a contest held by the Deseret News. Years later after the car was restored to its original form, it became known as the Mormon Meteor and the V12 form became the Mormon Meteor ll. There is a Mormon Meteor lll which was built to better handle the aircraft engine with an enclosed cockpit and large vertical stabilizer. That monster is now owned by... you guessed it... Jay Leno.
