About 60 years ago, the kid who lived next door told me about some new diecasts for sale at our favorite toy store (Karl, you get one guess which one!) So I begged my mother to take me and there I saw a rotating display with dozens of shiny new toys that made the old standby brand (Dinky) look tired and dull. Through the years there was a bit of a competition between us to see who could get the latest and greatest. As we moved into tweenhood, it was hard to let them go, but we also became aware they were soon to become valuable collectables, at least that's how we justified our purchases. Ultimately my friend visited relatives in Louisville and there cleaned out a toy store of some choice old stock.
Fast forward to the present, and my old friend, a VERY successful architect, became a collector of old 1:1 cars, including a 1950 Buick convertible and a 1960 Cadillac convertible, among others. He contacted me recently and said he was trying to locate the GLM 1958 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Special, especially the Dirnberger version in Tahitian Coral. So I decided to let mine go reasonably (he is an old friend, after all). But then I asked if he would be open to a trade for some old Corgis if he still had them, and he replied "sure". So he sent a photo of what he had, and I settled on a couple I really wanted that were equivalent in value. Then I asked if he would sell me some of the others, and I made a deal for some more.
The Fedex box arrived a few days ago. I was duly impressed - all are as perfect as they were in the store decades ago. And the boxes were as perfect as you can find today, many still with the Corgi club leaflet still inside. After all, these haven't spent their lives being carted around to toy shows and passing hands a dozen times.
Maybe I'm going through a return to childhood, but I think collecting these old toys may be better than resin or white metal. Certainly more fun. More pics later on, but in the meantime I know my friend has Dinky and other diecast squirreled away....
Wonderful acquisitions Harv. Your old friend certainly took great care of them. Like you, I find these old nostalgic pieces very interesting and prefer them to most of my current buys. Thanks for sharing.
I have not seen that golfer, caddie and bag for years. While I have the Jaguars in mint boxed condition, your look even better or “minter”.
Well, I'm impressed! Condition is everything.... and these are "everything."
Those are some impressive models. Fantastic condition. Congratulations on some amazing additions to your collection.
