A model I HAD to have though it does not fit in well with my other ones (see Curtis's post 27986).

I had responded that one was on the way, and it got here today! Drumroll.....get ready.....here it is:

A 1981 Ford Escort in stunning light gray! What? No applause....nothing....I think I hear crickets.

So Harv, you may be wondering, how does this lowly Escort fit in with your collection of sports and GT cars, woodies, land speed record holders, Le Mans winners, and Indy cars? It doesn't, but once I saw that Maxichamps was bringing it out, I had to get it.

You see, I spent about 10 days with the real thing in June, 1981 on a trip to Europe. Same color, but with Danish registry and rented from Avis. I drove it from Frankfurt to Stuttgart, Munich, Innsbruck, Turin, Milan, San Remo, Monaco, Lyons, and then...Le Mans. Good thing the rear seat folded so I could get a few hours of shut-eye at 2:00 AM. Then on to Paris and a drop-off in Calais at the Hovercraft terminal. Over a thousand miles, and it was a good little car. It also carried a goodly number of 1:43rds picked up here and there.

This pic was at an autobahn rest area between Frankfurt and Stuttgart

A crossroads near Rovereto Italy.

The Maxichamps replicated the 1:1 very well, just compare the economy car wheels in the photo above. And the color is just how I remember it, faded photos notwithstanding. Now I need to match the Danish plates and "DK" registry oval, though I don't remember if it was on the rear panel or corner of the window.

Just breathtaking! I see why you had to have it. Well at least it's a Ford.

Maybe a paint job like a certain '59 Chevrolet station wagon we know would spice it up? All kidding aside it is a pleasant little car.

That's a great model. When the real one first came out ..

a near neighbour had one in bright red. He had family who worked at Dagenham and he was able to nab one of the first off the line. We were all very jealous!
