The Bertone-designed Fiat Dino appeared in late 1966, same year as this model. It had a Ferrari V6, needed to boost the numbers of Enzo's V6 engines for homologation in F2 racing.
Mercury must have had a great relationship with most of Italy's real car makers, as I have noticed how soon the toys appeared following the real car. By taking pics of all these and posting them I've noticed a couple of things. First, the road cars have license decals from Torino (Turin), what was once their "Detroit". But I also saw only two versions, spread among six cars.
Secondly, except for the Alfa Giulia, Lancia Flavia, and Fiat Abarth, Mercury was able to cast the logo or font of the actual car on the base. For models with a black base I have overloaded the lighting during editing to help show this.
