1953 was a big year for British sports car manufacturers - MG, Triumph, Austin-Healey, Sunbeam, and Aston Martin all brought out two-seat roadsters. And Dinky Toys also took advantage by bringing out the 1953 cars as diecasts, in two colors and two racing versions each, for a total of 20 (plus two extra MGs and two French reissues). I hope to post all five this week.
The Sunbeam Alpine Mk. I, based on the Sunbeam-Talbot 90 saloon, was hand-built by Thrupp and Maberly. Right out of the gate it saw success in various rallies. Recently Model Auto Review compared the Dinky with a later white metal model by Somerville, and a new model just released by Matrix ( https://www.maronline.org.uk/good-better-best/). Dinky 101 is the road car, and 107 their racing version. Here are mine, all mint boxed though some boxes could be better.
Wonderful complete set Harv. Very impressive with a good written post included. I'm missing the civilian red one and my boxes are long gone.
And speaking of Sunbeams of this era, this is the Oxford Diecast Talbot 90 saloon and my conversion of one to a drophead. It is very clever how Sunbeam copied the styling of the Talbot 90 in the Alpine but sectioned it for a lower profile. Studebaker did much the same with the 1953 Studebakers and made the Starlight coupe.
