It has long occurred to me that my collection is mostly just displayed in my home for my enjoyment or the occasional friend or motorhead visitor.  i wanted to do something different with it. So given that is is lent and time for almsgiving I thought I would share a small portion of my collection with some folks in a nearby convalescent home. I made contact with the manager who thought that doing a small display for the selected residents might be well received.  Some are long term residents with chronic health issues. So packed up my recently completed old time service station and a selection of models and did a 15 minute show and tell for some of the folks there explaining I have been at this model hobby for most of my life. Explained what 43rd scale means and queried them on what type of cars they had owned over their lifetime. If I can get a list, next Friday session I'll see if my inventory includes some of those. One fellow was quite into fire engines, so I can certainly do a display of those soon. It was good to meet them and engage them in some automotive talk and explain a bit of each model displayed and my hobby of custom modeling

Good for you John. My wife builds dioramas, and like you, I am into model collecting. Years ago we were asked to give a talk and display of our hobbies at an assisted living facility which turned out to be a very rewarding experience for us and, I believe, the residents. As happens, the manager asked if it would be okay if she could pass this on to other homes as they are always looking for things of interest for their residents...long story short, we ended up doing several homes and enjoyed every minute of it. An offshoot of this led to local libraries and civic clubs asking for us to address their members as well. We have always thought that whatever we did to bring some sunshine to others, it pales by comparison to the pleasure we get in sharing our hobbies with others. We also host tours in our home for many car clubs which has become a tradition of clubs of all kinds to see the collections. In the past few years we have hosted the Corvette club, southeast Alfa Romeo, the Bandit club (Pontiac Trans Ams), the Camaro club and the Street Rod club. Next weekend we are hosting the Mississippi Antique Vehicle club with an anticipated attendance of. about 70 people. It is my belief that it doesn't do any good to collect things if you don't share them with others.
We have some very classy and caring people on this Forum.
What a terrific idea! We have a big assisted living location around the corner, and I may do the same.

Great idea. I did this with Dinky and Corgi toys  a number of years ago at a local nursing home. The nostalgia and discussion got quite exciting and made both my day and the residents, a memorable one.  I must be time for me to try something similar again. Thanks for the reminder John.
Great idea John! I plan on presenting a short history of the hobby, in two 1-hour sessions, to a continuing learning group that holds classes at a local community college next month. The powerpoint presentation is half-done, so I need to get the lead out over the next four weeks.
