[Closed] New from BoS...

PIC -Hi, Peter. Mirror placed too far back, ride height wrong, grey-coloured air intake are all unusual for a car fresh off the dealer's lot. Likely the modeler(s) copied a car that was modiifed or "restored" at a later date.

The ride height seems rather like an SUV - too high, although modifiers sometimes jacked their cars up a little to make them more menacing.

Air intake/cleaner was usually body-coloured or same colour as the striping.

The choice of moon/dog dish hub caps is somewhat unlikely as Hemi Cudas were usually loaded with options and would probably have had the full chrome rallye wheels or fake mags.

Chrome bumpers were used but most Cudas I saw had the body-coloured bumpers. However I don't think chrome ones were incorrect. Not sure how the '70 and '71 differed with respect to coloured vs chrome bumper availability and when rallye/under bumper lights could be ordered.

They did a pretty good job on the overall proportions, shape, and other details - I don't think these "coke bottle shapes" are all that easy to get right.

BOS Hemi Cuda

I agree with Randall on ride height and color of hood intake but most Hemi Cudas were sold new with poverty hub caps because loaded up with options they were close to the 4 G mark which was a lot for a Plymouth product in 1970.

Shel, I see we differ on the dog dish vs. full rallye wheels. I figured..

the budget hot rodders would have gotten a lower-priced Hemi Road Runner or Duster '340 and the wealthier ones would have sprung for a more loaded Cuda. It would be interesting to see if there are any production figures to back up our assertions.

Cudas and Challengers with big blocks had small caps must have turned out to be the retro look on muscle cars. I recently sold a Challenger hemi that also had small caps. I like the mag or rally cap look on mopars better than small caps.

The "dog dish" hub caps were a cost saving measure for those who ordered their cuda with the intention of swapping out aftermarket wheels and tires, which could be sized and styled like the era. Maybe chrome cragars, or aluminum slotted wheels, or American mags. Or for those with a more serious intent, some keystone wheels and drag racing tires.
Why spend on rally wheels? Almost every muscle car on the road in those days had aftermarket wheels.
The roof and rear quarters look funny. The lower trim on vinyl top looks off
And the hockey stripe does not follow the crease down to door well. Too thick at front too I think. And the side mirrors are too big.

Christopher et al - good points. I did swap out my aluminum wheel covers for Cragar SS look-a-likes made by Rocket (or was it Holley?... too long ago). But I was a poor student and bought my car used, souping it up as I went along. If I had the wherewithal to buy a new Cuda, I'm not sure I would have gone for ordering it with the dog dishes.

Having digressed a bit, it is sure looking like this model misses on quite a few points.

If somebody had told me that a very elderly, short-sighted gentleman with a distinct tremor in the hands and wrists, and a shortage of good reference material, had gone into his garden shed and made this model from a block of balsa wood, hand-painted it and added wheels from an old plastic toy car, I would have said "Good try, Pop. Now go and have a lie down. Your vision will probably come back after you've rested quietly for a bit."

Oh, I know, I know, don't judge by one picture. But if it's as crude and untidily detailed as it looks here, I think the type of hubcap or the colour of the hood scoop are pretty much irrelevant. Compared with, say, the Minichamps Dodge Challenger (essentially much the same body?) it looks pretty clunky to me.

But then I'm desperate to get out for a walk and it's pouring with rain so basically I'm just lashing out an anything in sight, really. Apologies as ever.

p.s. I think the GLM Lincoln Continental in the next post up does look very nice (provided they fix that "vinyl" roof). So I am not just bitter and twisted.

I bought a used 1970 Hemi cuda in 1975. $2k.
Yellow, black shaker, black vinyl top black buckets pistol grip 4 speed and rally rims. Had 42k miles. Gas crisis. No one wanted those cars.
Sold it in 1981 for $6k thought I really cleaned up......
