I hope everyone is ok or recovering from this disaster. Humans (and civilization) seems so widespread but the natural forces here and everywhere in the cosmos tend to always play a part.
Karl forgot to mention that, as soon as he left town to go on a Lane rally last week, Margie was left without power shortly thereafter. I hope she has forgiven you!
Interestingly, not all of western NC had problems. Two days ago, as part of a continuing education class on geology, my professor and others made a field trip along the Ocoee River in TN and into Murphy NC and a mountain north of there. Everything normal, power on, no evidence of damage anywhere. The 'eye' went to the east, then looped over to the tri-cities area of NE TN. We had some scary winds here for a while, but only localized flooding in spots that are prone to such.
Prayers may help the prayer-giver feel good, but action is what's needed, and kudos to Karl for what he is doing. A few days ago I made a monetary contribution to an east TN charity helping with relief. I tried buying bottles of water at Walmart to contribute, but they were sold out! On the nextdoor app yesterday, a call was put out for warm clothing. I am guessing that many skeedaddled in summer wear. Now a cold front has passed through, and those mountains get cold at night. I still had a lot of my wife's old clothes that I had not yet taken to Goodwill following her death. So I gathered up 10 bags of sweaters, etc., old coats, and no longer needed blankets and dropped them off at the City of Oak Ridge offices where contributions have been collected. So if God works in mysterious ways, perhaps not clearing out my house entirely prior to this event was a message to my brain to hold off emptying a couple closets until there was a genuine need.
We're hunkering at home in Clermont, west and south of Orlando. Clermont is on the Mid-Florida Ridge and has good elevation, which we hope will help. Today is literally the calm before the storm, but this is going to be intense for sure.
So far the local Waffle House is still open, which is a good sign.

Please be safe Paul. Prayers for you and family and all in the treacherous path of Mother Nature!
@john-barry Good to hear you are okay JayBee; I hope your home and town are clear of this terrible storm. Did you need to relocate for a while until the worst is dealt with?
