[PICS] 1960 Ford Galaxie Starliner by Motorhead Miniatures

I was in two minds about going for this model. There looked like there might be some detail shortcomings, especially at the price. Motorhead quote $95. Models Anonymous are offering it for "only" $80, which is still in Matrix territory. Still, it looked like a pretty attractive model of a car I really like, and fellow Forum-eer John Quilter was happy with his, so I went for it.

And on the whole it really is a handsome model. The shape and proportions seem good. Contrary to a couple of comments I've read online, the glazing on mine is a good fit, and they have really captured that big, complex rear window. As you can see I added a set of self-adhesive whitewalls, although I have to say that (a) the plain black tyres don't look nearly as donut-like as they seemed to in pictures and (b) if you go online you find a surprising number of photos of the Starliner without whitewalls (and a lot of those WITH whitewalls are tacky-looking "lowriders"), so the plain wheels are not such a deal-breaker. In fact, in bright Yosemite Yellow the car almost looks slightly OTT with the whitewalls. But then OTT was the order of the day back then, so that's OK.

Bad points? The chrome along the waistline and the fins seems to be BMF, slightly wavy in places, and on the left-hand side of my specimen it makes a right angle at the rear of the car just a little too soon and misses the trailing edge of the fin almost completely, although to be fair, it still gives the right impression. The bright ribbed chrome feature behind the rear wheels is not as well done as it could have been. If you look VERY closely, from a very low angle, you can see that there is some sort of ribbed effect printed on to the inner surface, but it isn't clear enough or bright enough, and from most angles it tends to look like plain grey paint. Surely they could have managed to fit a piece of P/E brightwork?

The front "gunsights" are very delicately done, but I suspect just a touch oversize?

So, yes, I think maybe the price is pushing it a bit, but it's a pretty good effort nevertheless, and they seem to be selling. A couple of weeks ago the silver version was "sold out" on the Motorhead site and the red one was "retired" (whatever that means!), then they re-appeared, and now the red and yellow versions seem to be sold out again at Motorhead, although you-know-who currently has all 3 versions in stock.

Not that I would want to encourage you in any way. I know you are in an endless battle with your conscience (and your bank manager).

Thanks Graeme. The white walls make the car come alive.

I've been on the fence but now it becomes a must have.
