Question about Franklin Mint 1/43 Duesenberg....

Why is this unit garnering such high bids on the 'Bay? Does its roof retract? (Before I receive any comments about the roof, I'm just kidding.)

Dillon, I wasn't aware that this FM 1:43 Duesenberg existed. I know that FM had a short-lived 1:43 series of classic cars, as I have a couple of them. But I can find no record of this Duesenberg. The same dealer has a 1927 Lincoln Sport Touring in 1:43 also listed. Its picture seems to show the same kind of klunky opening doors that FM 1:43s were known for. I was also not aware that FM had ever made such a Lincoln. Perhaps, and this could easily be correct, with my little interest in FM I just missed these.

There is one other possibility. Sometimes FM released cars on a regional basis as a "come on" at a low price. I bought the white Cord L-29 Lincoln convertible coupe in that way. Perhaps this Duesenberg came to a limited area in that manner.

So there are my ideas, but no real answer. I will wait with you for those with more knowledge to solve my ignorance.

Later: I went back to the picture. It looks a lot like a Solido to me, the closed cabrio that Solido released in the early 1980's.

David, I wasn't aware of this model, either, but I went to the

Car List & Reviews page above and under FM's 1:43rd list, found the
Duesenberg in the Classic Luxury Cars category. I think that's the
documentation you're looking for.

It may well have been limited or regional; I don't know about that. But as for
proving that FM released it, I think it's inclusion on their list of Classic Luxury
cars in 1:43 proves that they did, indeed, make it. And the '27 Lincoln Sport
Touring is also shown, in green with a tan top.

By the way, there's also a photo of it, viewable by clicking on the model name
as shown on the list. The Car List has proven to be a valuable reference
guide, and I refer to it frequently.

Thanks, Richard. I'm not in the habit of using this great feature. I recognize the series and have three of them. Somehow the others just didn't register with me. Obviously that's true with others, because this auction interest suggests there aren't many of them out there! I think I'll pass this time.

David, the model illustrated above is not a ......

Solido. The Solido model is completely different. I checked with the Solido examples I have.

BTW Solido first released their version of a Duesenberg in the late '60's. They have amended the design over the years and today it is a shadow of it's former self. No suspension and white walls printed and not seperate parts are among the 'improvements'.

Cheers Chris

I can't recall why I originally passed this one up.

I do have several of the Classics. Probably did not buy it because it closely resembled a Solido Duesenberg J that I had.

Yep! The FM model is even in the same colour scheme ....

as the most common colour Solido released for their Type 'J'.

Chris - My Solido J is gray & black

It might be the initial color because I remember getting one as soon as they came out. Gray suits it well.
