"Pictures don't lie"

That's what someone posted on one of the forums a few months ago. We were in a discussion about evaluating a model based on the first few photographs someone posted, which, IMO, is always a mistake. Angle, lens, lighting, and more can affect how a photo turns out, even distorting the lines of a car. Here's an example, albeit an exaggerated one from David Knight's posting on Tuckers;

photo no longer available

It's obvious what happened here, the lens of the camera distorted the lines of the truck making it look bowed.

The same thing can happen with the photo of a model but it's harder to detect, particularly when we blow the photo of a 1/43 model up to four or five times its normal size which happens frequently. The next time someone posts a large photo of a model on your screen, hold another 1/43 up to the screen and see how huge the photo looks. This is why some models can look great in hand but appear out of proportion in a photo. The magnification distorts the features of the model so much, it's almost impossible to tell what the model looks like in person.

In that light, Dick Johnson sent me the video below. He was concerned about posting it because it has some political content (thank you, Dick). I think it's apolitical enough and fascinating enough that we can post it here. The point of the video is to demonstrate what can be done with current technology. Take a look. But, please let's refrain from getting into a right, left or even middle of the road rant about politics. The video is an imagination and not real.

You can read the article that acompanied the video here.

John, that picture of an actual Tucker on a flatbed is taken from a video that showed distortion.

I took it to show the black walls.

I understand, David. I just thought it was a nice example of how a lens can distort an image.

Large 43rd scale photos "we blow the photo of a 1/43 model up to four or five times its normal size which happens frequently". Yes, I know this well, when I photo one of my custom creations it is inevitable that the large photo will show ALL the imperfections and errors much to my chagrin. Maybe this technique should become my quality control method but usually the models are already "done" by the time I photograph them.

John...... What was the point of the imagine video other than it's a classic song?

The primary point was to showcase the technology used to create it.

The primary point on the post was to caution folks to be wary of evaluating any model by photos alone.

That song always makes me sad....

Just like Judy Garland singing "Somehere over the Rainbow".

Interesting, Randall. I think you make an apt comparison here.

Both songs speak of a hope that there is something better while acknowledging the helplessness of our current situations. I'm glad my hope doesn't rest in the hand of men!
