In a compilation by Martin Edwards “Crimson Snow” I just finished  “Death in December “ by Victor Gunn originally published in 1943.   The hero drove up to the scene of the crime from London in “speeding Alvis”.

Alvis Car and Engineering Company Ltd was a British manufacturing company in Coventry from 1919 to 1967. In addition to automobiles designed for the civilian market, the company also produced racing cars, aircraft engines, armoured cars and other armoured fighting vehicles.

Here's my two Alvis cars, Dinky 38D, which I've identified as a 1938 4.3 S/C Vanden Plas tourer, and by AutoCult, a 1933 Speed 20 SA 4.3L Special. My other Alvises (Alvii?) include smaller scale Saracen and Saladin armored vehicles.

And more automotive history, re Alvis.  As late as the mid 1970s after they were done making cars they made military tanks and other military vehicles.  The Alvis Scorpion and Scimitar tanks were powered by modified Jaguar 4.2 liter XK engines!
