I just received one of the LookSmart Ferrari 330 P3 Le Mans racers. There have been several beautiful racing cars through the years - the rugged macho look of the Blower Bentley, the swoopy Porsche 917 longtail, and many Ferraris. But I think the 330 P3 (and the P4 successor) top the list.
I'm sure you have all watched Ford vs. Ferrari (who in this group hasn't?). In the scene where the 330 P3s are being pushed into position past the pits for the start of the 1966 Le Mans, Ken Miles (Christian Bale) says to Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) "Well, if this were a beauty pageant, we just lost." So true, though the Ford GT Mk. II is no slouch either.
As to be expected, the LookSmart model is excellent, and I'll let pictures do the talking, though I find the omission of seat harnesses a bit of a flaw. LookSmart made all three 1966 cars (coupe Nos. 21 and 22, and this NART spyder No. 27). As we know from the movie, all three DNF'd. The No. 27 NART entry, driven by Richie Ginther and Pedro Rodriguez, had a gearbox failure in the 11th hour.
I wanted to buy all three, and expected my usual sources would notify me of their availability last year. But something strange happened with US distribution. The importer may not have ordered enough, or there weren't many left when they put an order in. I have a suspicion that the Japanese cornered the market on them, but it is just a suspicion. I found this one still on the list of a Chicago area motorsports art dealer. A lesson to me, don't trust that a regular supplier will always notify you of releases, make your wantlist known ahead of time.
So if anyone knows where Nos. 21 and 22 can be found (reasonably), LMK.
Beautiful Ferrari and a great write-up Harv. Thanks for this.
It looks Fantastic Harv!
I have been waiting patiently for this release and your pics really show how nice it is done.
Can I ask where you got it?
the vender I was expecting it from doesn't have them yet.
thank you.
@ben-lampson Ben - see my write-up. They became like unobtainium overnight. I wish I could find the other two cars. The dealer I bought from must have only had this one, it is no longer on his website.
BTW, an ebay search didn't locate any, but I found that their 1962 Le Mans winner (Ferrari 330 TRI/LM) has an asking price 3 times what I paid in 2017.
