"Too nice to display" - is there such a thing?

I finally opened the gorgeous Coronado Red '61 Pontiac Ventura that I had gotten at a great sale price from Brooklin Models Outlet a couple of months back, with the intent of putting it on display in one of my cases.

My immediate thought was "Wow, this is SO beautiful - the fit-and-finish, the depth and gloss of the paint job, and the overall look of the model - it's TOO nice to display, I should just leave it in the box for safe-keeping!"

Has anyone else had that thought? I realize it's a bit over-the-top, but as collectors, sometimes we get a bit...obsessive?

By the way, I did put it out and it looks GREAT!

That is a beautiful model.  Regarding your question, no, I have never bought a model only to leave it in the box.  My golden rule is to only buy models I have room to display.  In fact, I am now at the stage where I sell a model to make room for a new one.  But, that's me.

I am very familiar with that feeling. Some of my models are so special, I keep them carefully stored to preserve them. I'm not saying it makes sense...I just do it.

Lol, I have thought about getting two identical replicas of each of my model cars ..... one to happily display and one to keep protected in it's box. Ummm, but until I am a multi-millionaire with both money and unlimited space, I can't do that !

Due to display space, only a certain amount of my replicas can be displayed at one time, so a certain amount of balance between shelf and box is going on.

I am a very disciplined collector now ( I was not 30 years ago). Every model I buy has a purpose. I don't buy to fill shelves or put in storage for fear it can breaks just looking at it if displayed.

They are all in air tight cabinets and I moved them from time to time. I don't believe in static collection displays that never move around.  The only models that go to storage are those I am bored to look at. I consider them negative collector's assets.

Interesting question Barry, and even more interesting responses. Personally, my most prized, and/or 'too nice' models, go on display in what I would term a special place. I have a few of them.

These areas are all within climate-controlled places in the house with regulated temps and humidity. Where I store the boxes, in the basement, is not quite as regulated and would cause me worry. I store very, very few models in boxes down there.

My favorites - I want to see.

Barry, I can understand that feeling regarding 1:24 scale diecast models. Pieces fall off just sitting in the display case. Their fragile state reinforces my opinion why operating features only create more issues. I don't see that level of fragility with 1:43 scale.

BTW, your Ventura is beautiful...enjoy it.

I never leave a model in the box. If I buy a model I want to look at it. All 6,000 plus models in my collection are on display. In my mind I would have to ask why bother acquiring the model in the first place if you didn't want to look at it or share it with others.

@bob-jackman

I agree with you, and where to display is part of my decision when purchasing.

It bugs me to have a fair number of my models tucked away due to display space issues, but I guess the alternative is to not have them.  It seems there is no clear answer for collectors other than to do what brings you the most collecting joy.

@moe-parr Funny you should ask... I was thinking this very thing when I opened the ABC Brianza Lenin snow car. It's so detailed, with so many tiny parts that my big old thumbs would knock off that I wondered if I'd ever truly unbox it. For now, it's staying securely in its package until I formulate my final presentation plan.

I have more than I can display but feel bad about it so I keep the boxes in an accessible location and, occasionally, grab a box, empty it, and spend perhaps 20 to 30 minutes taking a close look at those models and thinking about what I can do with them in terms of display or photography.

@bob-jackman 6,000 models on display? Holy Cow!

Bob, maybe you have shown some pictures of how you display them, but if not, would love to see how this is done.

Hint - Smile
