The first VW’s were imported to the U.S. in 1949. Those imported before the mid ‘53 models are the rarest and most sought after and are known as Split Window models’s as the rear window was in two pieces until mid ‘53 when an oval window replaced to two piece window. Early VW’s imported were the standard models such as the ‘50 model pictured here. By ‘52 the deluxe version only was imported. Minichamps did a nice ‘52 version in at least four different colors. Here is a comparison between the ‘50 actual car and a ‘52 in 1:43 by Minichamps.

Dark green is one of those other colors - that's what mine is.

And those early 50s VW standard bugs had cable operated mechanical brakes and a full "crash" box transmission, 1100cc as I recall.   An uncle owned one.

And an opening engine compartment, quite rare in 43rd scale.

@john-quilter

John, these four ‘52 split window VW’s are the only ones I have seen with opening engine compartments. Minichamps has done many other VW’s none of which have this feature. I think the blue one was the first of these four and it was a while before I even discovered the opening engine compartment.
