I'm a fan of whitewall tires on most pre 65 cars, and have a circle cutter to add ww's where I believe they are needed. WW's sure perk up AMT 1/25th 49 to 54 Fords, and PMC 51 to 54 Chevies.
Once in awhile however, WW's seem out of place. Such is the case with this Greenlight 55 Chevy station wagon. It came with ww's, and I simply pried off the tires and put them back on with the ww facing inward.
This is how I got it from Greenlight.
This is how it looks now.
I also prefer WWs, but like you mentioned, this wagon looks better with black tires. Good move on your part.

On this model, the black walls look much better. But the overall look of the model will always determine it for me.

Any choice is very subjective.
For 1955 Chevrolets, I think any Bel Air would look best with whitewalls. The base 150 however, which was a more work designed vehicle should have blackwalls. 210, your choice. Nomad, whitewall, 4 door station wagon, blackwall.
I guess for me it is based on the overall use of the vehicle. Ultimately, the owner chooses.
I like Whitewalls on most cars, but the wagon definitely looks better with Blackwalls.
@david-green I totally agree that the choice should (would) reflect the general use of the vehicle and ergo, the character if its owner: Work / utility vehicle, no nonsense attitude, blackwalls. Cruising / country club vehicle, a debonaire attitude, whitewalls.
I like to put whitewalls on all my U.S. sedans, but I have an Avenue 43 Mercury Comet Cyclone in metallic ice blue/grey that has thus far been spared this indignity!
