Hi David
I certainly remember Rockets. My bother had the Grand Canyon set for Christmas 1970 - great fun. Corgi also issued WhizzTrack for their larger scale toy cars. Some components were interchangeable with both systems.
Even though I have tried many internet searches I could never find out what the beef was with Mattel. Lone Star when they introduced their Flyer versions of their Impy cars had a similar track system to Rockets. Matchbox meanwhile had short sections of track that could be connected together and their system lasted for ages. One why around Mattels patents.
If Matchbox found out that Mattel used their Ford Mustang for the mule to test their first Hot Wheels car then I wonder if Mattel would ever get their Hot Wheels cars and system off the ground.
I do have some images of Rockets cars and other fast-wheels cars on my FlickR album:

This 1:64ish model represents the London - Mexico rally winner from 1970. This rally started at Wembley Stadium in London on 19 April and finished in Mexico City on 27 May and covered around 16,000 miles (25,750 km) through Europe and South America. It was won by Hannu Mikkola and Gunnar Palm.

This is the backing card to the model. The golden key was used as a tool to release the chassis. The sticker promotes this model as the winner of the Daily Mirror World Cup Rally. The small white sticker states the price, 20p, I paid for it many years ago! So I must have bought it post 15th February 1971 as this is the date when Britain went decimal. G.N.C.S. stands for Greater Nottingham Co-operative Society - the store I bought it from.

To keep your Rockets tuned these kits were offered - note this one is for Chassis C.
I bought this for the art work as much as the contents. Rockets did have a Porsche Carrera 6 and a fella with a spare wheel.
