Like a number of other people on the Forums I have developed a minor obsession with the horse-drawn Trabant which supposedly is on offer as a prize to deserving Members.

Horse drawn Trabant (rd)

I say “supposedly” because on more than one occasion I felt I might be a worthy recipient by virtue of my “Pointless Post of The Month” efforts but it was always the same old story that for one reason or another the Trabant prize was not quite ready for shipment.

In the end I lost patience with the vague and quite frankly evasive responses from the Awards Committee - and this despite a number of “anticipatory goodwill contributions” on my part (my legal advisers will be investigating).

So I decided to seek satisfaction elsewhere. I did a little digging. I did a bit of haggling. And look what turned up in the post from Romania yesterday.

Model box on table

Yes indeed. Take a closer look. Your eyes do not deceive you . . .

And inside the box is a clear plastic case with an individually numbered card insert . . .

Model, case and card v2

I think it is a delightful little model which captures the subject matter in a quite amusing and realistic way.

And it is a pretty fair match for our own (somewhat elusive) "prize Trabant".

Model vs originals

Of course, being produced by a small artisanal outfit without the benefit of the latest diecast manufacturing and finishing equipment, it is not quite up to the standard of, say, a typical Ixo partwork model, but it is so utterly charming and unusual that any minor defects can be readily excused. It will sit nicely with my small selection of East German Trabbies and Wartburgs.

The information on the back of the box is worth noting. I will be keeping 5 year old my car-loving granddaughter well away from it.

This appears to be No. 1 in a planned partwork series, with future releases already under development.

Future Roma models

Rather than the boxed model being offered for sale with an accompanying magazine, it is presented to the customer as a bonus when they go to a designated sales outlet and purchase a roll of toilet paper. Since one of these lasts a typical Romanian family 2 or 3 years, the outlay required for the complete set might be beyond the means of many local collectors, so you may be hoping to see remaindered examples turning up on eBay in due course.

And good luck with that.

As much as The Committee would like to celebrate your discovery with you, we are somewhat concerned and alarmed at the tenor of your post, Mr. Ogg, if that is your real name. At the recommendation of the recently and unjustly maligned Awards Committee, we were preparing to present to you the very prize you have so callously impugned as you tried unsuccessfully to accuse our award system of being improperly administrated. Needless to say, this incident makes that particular presentation awkward and may jeopardize any future benefits that may or may not have come your way.

However, all is not lost...yet. In an effort to assuage any hard feelings generated by the Awards Committee's "failure to respond," which was caused by an unexpected disagreement with the power company, who apparently insists on payment every month, the Committee is dispatching our most honored and respected goons representatives, Vinnie and his cousin, Mikey the Ape, to see if a mutually beneficial arrangement can be made. You may want to consider another generous Anticipatory Contribution prior to their visit. It will do much to affect their attitude as they arrive on your doorstep, most likely very late at night as their travel schedule is grueling, and they frequently are held up in customs over silly notions of what constitutes a "weapon" in their luggage until their bribe is paid paperwork is verified.

@jkuvakas

Being a timid soul who may possibly have a slight genetic predisposition to paranoia, I found it hard not to sense the faintest hint of a threat (not to say menace) in your response, but I am trying my best to reassure myself that was not remotely your intention. But just to be on the safe side I have arranged for my financial trustees in Nigeria to forward a rather generous additional Voluntary Contribution to your good selves as soon as they receive your settlement for the preliminary notarial and administrative fees and international handling charges (details to be sent direct to your personal e-mail address).

Meanwhile, I look forward to the imminent arrival of your representatives who, rest assured, will automatically receive a warm welcome at my residence.

@jkuvakas JK; thank you for your prompt threa......I mean, respectful response to the very undeserved Ogg criticism.  As our director you once again display our corporate classiness and unwavering confidence in our prize development program; including personal follow-up customer intimid...errr....interaction.  I suppose the 1:43 model purchased by Mr. Ogg is a means of coping with the crushing disappointment he surely suffered as a non-winner, but I do note that it falls short on detail accuracy.  Firstly the model is not that of our fully optioned Super Sport version (including sporty tach....I mean tack) and it of course cannot possibly capture the smells and sounds produced by our SS power train and the classy aroma of its well seasoned simulated genuine Corinthian leather interior.  Sadly it must be stated that we The Awards Committee are somewhat disappointed with the model producers proceeding with this choice without agreeing upon our required, but reasonable licensing and commission percentage numbers beforehand.  In the spirit of cooperation however, we have dispatched our representatives Vinnie "Fists" Canneloni and his second cousin Carmine "The Sledge" Parmigiana to Romania to complete payment  negotiations and to offer examples of how to redesign their factory equipment to ensure our mutual corporate well being.  This will of course include fruitful discussion regarding the viability of their proposed Trabant model production featuring design examples from later years of this revered marque.

@graeme-ogg Graeme; please be advised that our representatives have been directed to attend your residence immediately upon the conclusion of an earlier commitment in Romania.  For their safety they will be wearing signs with large script readable from your front porch, stating that they are not Christmas carolers.

But they're still goddam furriners! My automated sentry gun doesn't care if they are singing "Silent Night" or "O Sole Mio". Fire at will and don't spare the ammunition.

The combination of badger urine and nitroglycerine in model paint development is still in its infancy at the Testors company Graeme.  Accordingly  I suggest you handle your new "Demi-Trabant" model very carefully as the mixture recipe noted on the box label may have been pirated by the Romanians and be unstable.

By the way, I don't want to spoil the joke (yes, this post WAS intended as a joke) but just in case there is any confusion about what is real and what is fake I have posted some background details in the "Handicrafts" forum, so if anyone is interested in the "nuts and bolts" side of things they can pop over there and take a look.

Well considering that neither of our representatives are named Will then the danger is nullified.
